Everything you need to know about Keyword Research

Keyword research is one of the biggest parts of search engine optimisation. This is because if you choose valuable keywords, your website will become more popular. It will receive more traffic and visitors, and you will notice an increase in sales or advertising revenue.

However, if you choose bad keywords your website will become less visible. You may notice a drop in traffic and sales, and you will struggle to communicate effectively with your customers.
This is why you shouldn’t underestimate the importance of keyword research. If you do keywords right, you will attract the right kind of visitors to your site, which will vastly increase the popularity of your website.

Here’s everything you need to know about keyword research.

Using Relevant Keywords
The first thing that you must do is ask yourself if the keyword is relevant to your website. This is because users will click on your website based on your keywords, so if they are inaccurate the users will quickly leave.

For instance, if your website sells home furnishings in Canada, you may want to choose keywords such as ‘home furnishings in Canada’, ‘buy home furnishings online’ and ‘cheap home furnishings in Canada’. You audience is likely to be searching for these terms, so if you use them it will be easier for potential customers to find you.

However, you should avoid keywords like ‘home furnishings’ and ‘Canada’, as they are too vague and non-specific. Users searching for these terms may not find your store useful, so targeting them is a waste of your time.

Judging the Value of a Keyword
Different keywords will have different values, and it is important for you to know which are the most valuable. For instance, if you sell jewellery online you may notice that the silver jewellery sells much faster than the gold jewellery. This indicates that ‘silver jewellery’ is a more valuable keyword for your business than ‘gold jewellery’.
It can be difficult to work out the value of a keyword, but you can find out by checking your traffic, most viewed pages and sales to work out what is more valuable and what isn’t.

Test Your Keyword
You can test your keywords online to find out how valuable they are. This is a great way to get an insight into which keywords are most valuable to your brand. You can buy a sample keyword campaign from Google AdWords, and this campaign will test traffic to see how well the keyword works.

Determine the Value
Once you have run a keyword campaign you can determine the value of each keyword. Look at daily visitors and click through rates for your keywords, and see if any are more successful than others. Make a note of the keywords that work and the keywords that don’t. You can also analyse impressions through the campaign results, which should give you a greater insight into the keywords that help to increase traffic and promote sales.
