Google rankings change

Why Google rankings don’t tell the full story anymore

For years, Google rankings have been one of the main ways businesses measured the success of their SEO.

It made sense. If your website moved from page three to page one, you were heading in the right direction. If you reached the top spot, you expected more people to visit your website.

While rankings are still important, Google has changed so much that they no longer tell the full story.

Google isn’t the same search engine it used to be

There was a time when almost everyone searching for the same thing saw very similar results.

Today, that’s no longer the case.

Google now considers things like where you’re searching from, the device you’re using, what you’re actually mean by your search, and which search features it believes are most helpful.

Search for the same phrase on your phone and your desktop and you may see different results. Search from another town and the order of websites may change again.

That’s why it’s becoming increasingly common for two people to search for exactly the same thing and see different websites.

There isn’t one version of Google anymore.

Ranking number one doesn’t always mean you’re the first thing people see

Many business owners aim for the number one position, and understandably so.

The problem is that the number one organic result isn’t always at the top of the page.

Google now fills many search results with maps, local businesses, images, videos, frequently asked questions and other search features before the traditional website listings appear.

That means your website could technically rank first organically but still appear much lower on the page than it would have a few years ago.

Being visible has become just as important as where you rank.

Rankings are only one piece of the puzzle

This doesn’t mean rankings have stopped mattering.

We still monitor them because they help us understand how your website is performing and identify new opportunities.

What has changed is how we interpret them.

Rather than looking at one keyword in isolation, we look at the bigger picture.

Is your website attracting more visitors from Google?

Are those visitors turning into enquiries?

Are more people finding your services?

Is your overall visibility improving?

Those answers tell us far more about the success of your SEO than a single ranking ever could.

What matters most is growing your business

Our goal has never been to simply achieve a number one ranking.

Our goal is to help your business attract more customers.

Sometimes that means improving rankings.

Sometimes it means increasing the number of keywords your website appears for.

Sometimes it means improving the pages people are landing on so that more visitors become enquiries.

Google will continue to change, just as it always has.

The businesses that perform best won’t be the ones chasing a single ranking. They’ll be the ones focusing on creating useful content, building trust and making it easy for customers to find exactly what they’re looking for.

That’s exactly how we approach SEO.

Because at the end of the day, rankings are a useful indicator.

They’re just no longer the whole story.
